ROYAL PALACE
ROYAL PALACE
The Royal Palace of Madrid is an 18th-century architectural gem. It was built by the Bourbon dynasty from France, so its design was inspired by the Palace of Versailles. However, the Royal Palace in Madrid is the largest palace in Europe, with an area of approximately 135,000 square meters and more than 3,400 rooms. The exterior style is classicist Baroque, while the interior perfectly embodies the exuberance of the Rococo.
The new Bourbon monarchs wanted to reproduce the luxury they were accustomed to at Versailles. Also noteworthy are the fresco paintings on the ceilings, created by three of the greatest fresco painters in the history of art: the Neapolitan Luca Giordano, the Venetian Giambattista Tiepolo, and the German Antonio Rafael Mengs. No visitor is left without awe.
